The Co-curricular format is a part of school curriculum under which many activities are conducted. They play a vital role in shaping the personality of the children.
However, this system has envisaged a great transformation over the years. It was known by different names. It oscillated between SUPW (Socially Useful Productive Work) and extra-curricular activities.
No matter, its face has been different from time to time but the connotation remains the same. Whether it is given a due importance or not, it holds a great relevance in the perspective of growth and overall development of children.
As a matter of fact, we don`t give any value to it because it is the general propensity of both the teachers and parents to see only Academic performance of their children. They look at only one aspect of Education. They measure their performances on the basis of marks they secure. So, in order to underscore their percentage of marks, they keep their children under pressure. Hence, their innate and latent potentials are snubbed.
Thanks to C.B.S.E!  Taking into consideration other activities very pertinent, it has included them in the school core curriculum under C.C.E (Continuous and Comprehensive Evaluation).
It is based on various tools of assessment such as Projects, Assignments, Debate, Elocution, Group Discussion, Science Exhibition& models, Quiz, Art & craft, Environmental awareness, Mathematical models and exhibition, Music, Drama Games & Sports etc. Each one is evaluated with grades. Even the grades for child attitude, behavior, thinking and analytical aptitudes are also awarded. They are very useful for daily life.
Furthermore, It believes in learning by doing method of Education. It is, of course, the need of the hour to de-stress strains. Moreover, it intends to prepare children to compete with others in this competitive world.
Therefore, C.C.E has been designed in such a way as to inculcate overall personality development.
Thus, C.C.A has become the need of practice for C.C.E, having a close affinity with it. They are interrelated and interdependent on each other.
Hence, the purpose of C.C.A is to make children far bolder and full of confidence. Indeed, it is a platform for the children to explore their budding talents. Nonetheless, it is sinister of us that we criticize this system. But, we need to know that every new system is baffling in the beginning, however, can be understood with the passage of time.
